WINNERS OF THE FESTIVAL
BEST INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY AWARD
Materia oscura
by Massimo D'Anolfi e Martina Parenti
(Italy 2013)
Motivation:
Visionary. Thanks to evocative, distressing, sometimes violent images.
Disturbing. For the contrast between beautiful and silent landscapes and the brutality of experiments creating desolation, desease and death. Documented with a care bordering on mania by military filmcameras.
Terse. The absence of soundtrack both in the footage and the archive material is highlighted by the final camera-car that pulls us malinconically from a misterious microcosmos, sometimes surreal.
How sad, how sad. How terribly, terribly sad. The white veil becomes the universal symbol of suffering.
INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY JURY AWARD
The turtle's rage
by Pary El-Qalqili
(Germany 2012)

Involving and intense story/encounter between a man coming from Palestine and his young daughter, also author of the film.
Exemplar is the way the themes of identity, exile and family relationships are told on different narrative levels. It ends how it begins, with an EXT. - NIGHT of their Berlin home, as if to suggest that nothing actually ever begins or ends.
INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY MENTION
Nadea e Sveta
by Maura Delpero

Departures, returns, and again departures. Sweet and bitter. With a discreet and involved direction that manages to create intimacy with the protagonists along the whole film, transporting us in their intricate lives. The camera is delicate and equally involved, masterly able to spot, both in dialogues and faces, the hopes and the difficulties of three generations of silent women, living among us.
